Thankful Thursday: Friends

It's time for another Thankful Thursday. Today (as every day) I am thankful for...

I am thankful that God put my friends in my life. And yes I mean all of them. I am thankful that He didn't mean for us to go through this life alone. He puts people in our life as we embark on our journey for different reasons and to fill different goals. Sometimes, they are put there for our benefit. Sometimes, for us to benefit them. Sometimes it is both. Sometimes, someone is placed in your life to open your eyes to something bigger or to challenge what you believe and how you think. I am thankful for all of these situations and people.

I am thankful for my friends growing up in Georgia who were always playing outside with me and spending nights watching countless Disney movies.

I am thankful for my Youth Group friends from Buford church of Christ who always kept me on the right track, listened to my problems and supported me through a lot.

I am thankful for my Harding friends who saw me through college. Who were there for impromptu study breaks involving (again) Disney movies and dance parties. And for many planned and unplanned adventures.

I am thankful for my Young Professional friends from Buford church of Christ for helping me keep my priorities straight and keeping me sane while planning my wedding and being away from my fiance.

I am thankful for my friends here in Ohio who have taken me in and truly make me feel like I have lived here all my life. I am excited for the uplifting Monthly Sing tonight!

Last, but not least, I am thankful for my husband. He in my best friend and has been there through most of the above. He has never truly left my side. He supports me in every walk of life and through every decision. He is my biggest fan and will do anything in his power to help me and make me happy.

New Happenings of 2013

So Pearson and I have gotten involved with a little more at church since the beginning of the year. We are pretty excited for what this year has in store for us.

One of the new ongoing things is we will be working with the Hispanic ministry by teaching English to Spanish speaking adults using the bible. There is a team of about 12 teachers who will be working individually with students on a weekly basis throughout the year. We are starting with Hispanic members of our congregation and eventually will open it up to the Spanish speaking population in the area. This a great opportunity to offer something that they want and need and to maybe plant some seeds in the process. We are very excited and maybe a little nervous (or at least I am)...

For those of you who don't know, the church we attend (Fishinger & Kenny Church of Christ) participates in an area-wide, annual Bible Bowl competition for all ages. This year, the competition will be held on April 6th, and we have volunteered to compete on an adult team! Woohoo! This year, the questions come from the first 25 chapters of Genesis. They use the King James version of the Bible so we have been studying Genesis from the King James Bible and it is really cool and interesting because I haven't studied much from this "old" version. Anyway, wish us luck!

To end this post, I will share how excited I am that we are having the Monthly Sing for Buckeyes for Christ at our apartment this month! Every month, the Buckeyes for Christ get together at someone's house, have dinner and sing for hours. It is so fun and uplifting. On Thursday, we are having one at our apartment. I am excited because we have never had a big group over like this and it should be a lot of fun. I wonder what our partying neighbors will think when they hear a cappella singing coming from our apartment for hours on a Thursday night. :-P

Thankful Thursday: Shelter

It's Thankful Thursday again. Today I am thankful for...

A Roof Over My Head!
Sometimes I take this for granted. I think a lot of people do. The reality is, whether we believe it or not, there are a lot of people out there who don't get to experience this luxury. This has been on my mind a lot lately because the temperatures here in Columbus, Ohio have gotten down to the negatives this week! (Or at least in the single digits which "feel like" negatives). I have never experienced negative degree weather in my life. Ever. I have never been skiing or stayed in a log cabin in the mountains. Nope. I have experienced snow, of course, but with the temperatures in like the 20's, not negatives. It's been kind of a shocker. Anyway, all this to say I am very very grateful for our apartment, our heat, and our warm bed. I pray for those who don't have these "necessities" as most of us would call them. I want to do what I can to help these people. Pearson and I have volunteered at a homeless shelter a couple times with the Buckeyes for Christ. I am certainly glad that the homeless in Columbus do have a place to go, but that is a story for another post.

Thankful Thursday: ChiO's

It's time for another Thankful Thursday. Today I am thankful for...

Chi Omega Pi

At Harding University, I had the privileged to pledge a social club. A social club is the private school equivalent of a sorority. I have been immensely blessed by the ladies of Chi Omega Pi. I have countless memories of pledge week, planned functions, unplanned dance parties and movie nights, sports games, spiritual retreats, devotionals, meetings, and prayer groups. These girls were (and still are) truly my sisters. They were a perfect fit for me and I couldn't have found a replacement for a single one of them. My college experience would certainly not have been the same without ChiO's and I believe without a doubt that I would have been worse off without them. My sisters helped me get through college. I will treasure our friendships forever and I miss them tremendously.

She & Him

I'm obsessed with the musical duo "She & Him." I am sure most of you know who Zooey Deschanel is. She is the precious heroin of (500) Days of Summer, Yes Man, the TV series; New Girl and of course the original classic, Elf. Well, anyone remember her in Elf? This was her first major role in a successful film. And she had BLONDE hair! Anyway, she has some singing scenes in that movie and I just love her voice. I don't know what it is about it but it just makes me happy. It isn't the typical, beautiful opera voice or anything like that, and it is not a twangy, country music voice, but there is something about it.

Well, "She & Him" is an American indie duo consisting of Zooey Deschanel (vocals, piano, ukulele) and M. Ward (guitar, production) and like I said, I'm obsessed. Their music just makes me feel good.

Here is a video of one of my favorite She & Him songs. Enjoy!

P.S. You should hear their Christmas album too. It's pretty awesome.

Thankful Thursday

I have decided to try something in 2013... Thankful Thursdays. I am a week behind. I hope you will forgive me. Anyway, this week I am thankful for.....

The Internet
The internet is a wonderful thing.

With social networking, email, and instant messaging on the internet, we are able to keep up with friends and family who are miles away. And we can get in touch with them in a matter of seconds.

We can do tons of shopping with our finger tips without leaving the house. Online shopping is a beautiful thing, if you are smart about it.

The internet is useful to find information if you want to expand your knowledge on a certain topic. This can be used in research for a school project or just something you are interested in or something a lot of people seem to be talking about or, most importantly, proving someone wrong.

Speaking of something a lot of people seem to be talking about, I get my news on the internet. Current events are at our fingertips. Someone posts something on Facebook or in their blog about a shooting in Connecticut and suddenly the whole world knows what is going on. We can look up news articles from all over the world.

If you wish to, you can travel across the world while sitting at your computer. Or laying in bed on your phone/tablet for that matter. With Google maps, you can see the whole world and with the news articles I talked about before plus encyclopedias, photos, and videos, you can see a lot of the culture of a particular place right in front of you.

If you want to learn a new hobby or learn to do something better, there are tons of tutorials and instructional videos out there for just about anything your heart would ever want to learn.

And last but not least, music. There is tons of music out there to buy or stream. You can pretty much find anything you want to listen to or find new music around every corner. No more hearing something on the radio and going to the store to buy the CD (or cassette as it were back in the day). Just look it up on Itunes, spotify, pandora or plenty of other options.

Therefore, I am thankful for the internet. Quite frankly, I do not know what I would do without it.

I turned 18 23 yesterday... I cannot believe it.

The day wasn't anything special. Just a typical Tuesday. I worked. Pearson and I went to FUEL (dinner and bible study on Tuesdays with the Buckeyes for Christ).

The only difference was I got a couple gifts and cards in the mail and in my email. Pearson gave me a Johnny Cash album on vinyl to play on the turn table I got for Christmas! The funny thing is, my parents also gave me a couple vinyl records and one was the same Johnny Cash record Person gave me. (I like Johnny Cash if you couldn't tell).
A lot of people told me "Happy Birthday".

I can't help but wonder how Gandalf would reply to that phrase.... "What do you mean? Do you wish me a happy birthday, or mean that it is a happy birthday whether I want it or not; or that you feel happy on my birthday; or that it is a birthday to be happy on?" Ok sorry, I am kinda on a Lord of the Rings kick right now. Or rather a Hobbit kick.

I digress.

23. It is not a significant number or age. I am not entering my 20's for the first time. I am not just now officially an adult. A cannot legally do anything now that I am 23 that I couldn't do at 22, but for some reason, 23 just sounds so old. I don't really mean I think 23 is old. I just mean I cannot believe that I am 23. I cannot be 23!

.....What's even weirder...? My brother will be 15 20 next month! What?! He isn't a teenager anymore? That is not only shocking, but also kinda sad. My wittle bwover is growing up. Sigh. I talked to him on the phone last night for 1 hour 14 minutes and 40 seconds. I miss him!
