Enduring All Things: September 2013

Look, there she goes, that girl is so peculiar...

Everybody STOP! Right now. Watch this video.

This is absolutely amazing. This girl is my new role model!

So while watching this awesome video I got to thinking about Disney Princesses. I have always said that Belle was my favorite, but I had never really thought about why.

So here are some reasons why I love Belle.
  1. She reads: Belle loves books so much so that when there is nothing else, she reads the same ones over and over. And she reads while walking through the village. She is more than just a beauty, she is a brain too. I admire this about her because most of the Disney Princesses don't show this quality at all.
  2. She loves her father: When Maurice gets taken by The Beast, Belle offers to be kept hostage in his place. Belle is a young girl who is proposing to stay locked in a castle with a beast for the rest of her life because she would rather be in that very scary situation than to have her father there. That is pretty amazing to me.
  3. She doesn't care what others think about her: Belle is weird. And I know she knows it. She has to be able to hear the people singing about her as she strolls down the street. But she doesn't care. She is different. She loves to read in a world where is unacceptable for women to read, but she doesn't try to hide it. She lives with a crazy inventor of a father but she embraces him and appreciates the life he created for them. People talk but Belle just doesn't care!
  4. She wants more from life than to be a pretty wife: <--Ha that rhymed! Belle says/sings "There must be more than this provincial life" several times throughout the movie. When Gaston wants to marry her only because she is beautiful, she acts like he is ridiculous. She wants more than that from life, even though most girls swoon over Gaston and would give anything to be his wife.
  5. She doesn't care about outward appearance: Most princes in Disney movies are handsome drop-dead knock-outs (by cartoon standards), but the beast is not only ugly, but also downright scary in appearance. Though, Belle is a little hesitant at first, she doesn't stereotype. She believes the Beast can be kind despite his appearance and falls in love with this hideous character.

So basically, I have come to the conclusion that not only do I like Belle the best, but I think we could all learn something from her. Or at least we could learn more from her than some of the other Disney Princesses who portray other roles and goals for women.

And I'll leave you with a picture of Belle from 'Once Upon a Time'.
Isn't she lovely? If you don't watch it, you totally should!

Which is your favorite Disney Princess?

Thankful Thursday: Buckeyes for Christ

Today for Thankful Thursday I am thankful for...
Buckeyes for Christ

Buckeyes for Christ is the name we use for the college ministry at Fishinger & Kenny Church of Christ. This wonderful program has been on my heart and mind a lot this week as we have said goodbye to the leader and campus minister of 12 years. Jeff and his family will be sorely missed at Fishinger & Kenny. That much was evident as we sent him off with a huge, tear-filled yet hilarious going away party on Sunday.

I am thankful that Jeff and the Buckeyes for Christ took us in when we moved here (as did the 20+ group-the line between the two can be blurry sometimes). I am thankful for the friendships I have made in this group. I am thankful for the fun, wholesome things we do. I am thankful that these people love me and want to help me be a better person.

But I am sad that couldn't find any more pictures with me in them.

More September Marriage Goals

For the last month I have been linking up with Amberly for her marriage and relationship goals linkup. The last two times I have proposed (to myself) these goals.
  • To change my attitude and stop taking my frustration out on my husband, the innocent bystander.
  • To put away my electronics when Pearson is home and spend that time with him.
I have to say, so far so good. At least from my stand point it is. Maybe I should ask P.

First of all, I have still been pretty busy and stressed this week but I haven't caught myself taking it out on Pearson. And really it hasn't required that much of a conscious effort. Once I made up my mind to change my attitude, it just kinda came natural.
I have had minimal access to my phone and laptop when Pearson has been around. The only time I would have it out is when he was doing homework or grading tests. That is a big deal for me. I used to have to have my phone with me at night while watching TV. I had to have something to do besides just watch even though that is our time. I'm not talking about flipping through channels. I mean when we are watching one of our shows I am usually either on Twitter, Pinterest, or Facebook. And when I ran out of new material on those, I would play solitaire. I know, ridiculous, right? I am proud to say that stopped this week.

I will have to be intentional about keeping these things up (especially the technology thing), but I am encouraged by how well it is going so far.
Thanks so much for reading!!!

Fall Watch List

So, yesterday was officially the first day of Autumn. Can I get an amen?!

One of the biggest things I love about Fall is having all my TV shows back on after waiting all summer for them! Maybe I shouldn't admit this, but I always get really attached to the characters. When they come back on in the fall, it is like being reunited with my friends after spending a summer apart.
Anyway this fall our TV schedule is packed and I am stoked. Most of these shows are coming back for another season. We have watched them up until this point and they left last season with a huge cliff hanger in the finale. Don't you just hate that?! But some of the shows on our watch list are new. They are either spin offs of shows we already love, or they just look awesome!

So without further adieu, the Maugeri Watch List:

  • 8:00 Once Upon a Time on ABC. [Premiers 9/29]
  • 9:00 Sleepy Hollow on FOX. [Premiered 9/16]
  • 8:00 Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D on ABC [Premiers 9/24]
  • 8:00 The Originals on The CW [Premiers 10/15]
  • 9:00 Supernatural on The CW [Premiers 10/8]
  • 10:00 Duck Dynasty on A&E [Premiered 8/14]
  • 8:00 Once Upon a Time in Wonderland on ABC [Premiers 10/10]
  • 8:00 The Vampire Diaries on The CW [Premiers 10/3]
  • 8:00 The Big Bang Theory on CBS [Premiers 9/26]
  • Catching up on the ones we missed
  • College Football

I think that will about do it. Of course we will have to watch some later on Hulu because they come on at the same times as others. That's what Fridays are for.

What are you excited to watch this Fall?

Thankful Thursday: Music

Today for Thankful Thursday I am thankful for...

Music has always been a big part of my life. I love to sing and play. It makes me happy. I have always loved musicals, even when I was young and couldn't appreciate them the way I do now. But not only do I love being involved in music, I also love just listening.

Music is healing. It can be a mood changer. I have go-to artists or genres for almost every situation in life. When I am sad, I listen to Five Times August. When I need to concentrate on work or a project of some sort, I go to my classical Pandora station. When I need to get motivated, I usually listen to Disney.

Just the other day I had worked all day and then had errands to run after work. I got home and the kitchen was already a mess plus I had groceries to put away. I was tired and just did not want to do anything. I sat on the couch with Pip for a while until I finally made myself get up and get busy in the kitchen. I decided to play a little music from Songza on my phone. [If you don't use Songza, you totally should. It has tons of playlists based on the day and time and whatever activity you are doing. You can also save playlists to quickly find and play later]. I clicked the 'cooking' category and one of the options under Country Music was 'Cowgirl Kiss-offs.' Let me just say, cleaning the kitchen was no longer a chore. I was singing, dancing, air-guitar playing, and totally rocking out. Those groceries were put away and dishes were cleaned in no time! And, I even swept and mopped the floor! I know, right? Crazy!

So today I am thankful for music. For the way it can change my mode and make any situation better.

Thanks for reading!

Oh and P.S. I created a new Facebook page for the blog so be sure to like it!

September Marriage Goals Update

At the beginning of September, I linked up for the first time with Amberly to talk about monthly marriage goals.

A lot has happened since that post two weeks ago. I went 'home' for a week to work in the office. I got home late [or should I say early?] Friday night [Saturday morning] and had a pretty busy weekend too. I really haven't had much opportunity to work on my goal for this month...

My main goal for the month of September was to change my attitude and stop taking my frustration out on my husband, the innocent bystander. Like I said, I traveled last week so I was a tad stressed getting ready to go and anticipating a week away from home. I think I handled it better than I would have if I didn't have this goal in mind.
I also have another goal to add this month. I am going to spend less time on my phone and laptop when Pearson is home and spend that time with him. One specific incident that brought me to this goal happened on Saturday, after I got back. I was standing in the bedroom glued to my phone [reading a blog post, no less] and Pearson was trying to tell me a story. Finally, he gave up [and I don't blame him], said "I'm sorry" and walked away. HE apologized to ME for bothering me while I was reading something on my phone!!! Well, I felt pretty bad. Wouldn't you? I just got home the night before from a week away from him and I can't even spare a couple minutes to hear his story without my attention being elsewhere? Ridiculous! So, from now on, when I am with Pearson, I am going to be with Pearson, not with my phone, laptop, or anything else.

Liebster Award

What an honor! Lacy from Chosen nominated me for the Liebster Blog Award! You should totally go check her out. She is a very inspirational blogger who loves our Savior and is not afraid to be herself. Thank you so much, Lacy for nominating me!

First, a little about the Liebster Award:
The word liebster is German for sweetheart or dearest. The award is given to up and coming bloggers with less than 200 followers who show potential. It is not given by judges or anything like that, but rather it is given by blogger peers based on your blogging personality. You can read more about it on Lacy's blog here. And see where she nominated me here. And did I mention that she one of my favorite blogs to read? You should check her out.

So here is what I get to do now that I have been nominated:

  • Thank your nominator! Include a link back to their blog with your appreciation
  • Answer the 11 questions given to you by your nominator
  • Post 11 facts about yourself
  • Nominate 5-11 other up-and-coming blogs with less than 200 followers for the award--no tag backs!
  • Come up with your own set of 11 questions for your nominees to answer
  • Let your nominees know you nominated them so they can pass it on

Questions from Lacy:
Why do you blog?

When Pearson and I got married, we moved to Ohio which is at least 500 miles from our closest friends and family. I started my blog as just a means of documenting our new married life for our family and friends to read and keep up with us a little better than with just Facebook.

Is your main job blogging or do you have a "real job"?

I have a real job as a Quality Assurance Analyst for a computer software company.

If you could only eat one thing forever it would be____
Ooh. This is a tough question. I love food. I don't know if I could pick just one. I could say some cop-out answer like chocolate, but that is boring.

Describe yourself in 6 words.
Christian, Wife, Musical, Loving, Nerdy, Friend

What is your cure for "bloggers block"?
I really don't try to blog every day, so I don't have a lot of trouble with blogger's block. I have a few posts ideas waiting to be written that I keep track of. Those will hold me for a while. One of the places I get ideas, however is Twitter. I look back at my tweets to see whatever I have been thinking or doing and sometimes I can make a blog post out of it.

What is the best book you have ever read?
Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, hands down. If you haven't read it, you NEED to right now!

Weird question: If you were something in nature ( tree, flower, cloud, star) what would you be and why?
I would want to be a cloud because I could watch down on everyone, but I could be seen and enjoyed even in brightly lit cities {unlike a star}, and people couldn't cut me down for their own gain {like a tree}. I wouldn't be stepped on and un-appreciated {like grass or flowers}.

What is your favorite kind of music and why?
Country Music because I was raised that way. And because I can understand the words. And I don't know, I just like the music.

What has been your favorite trip to ever take?
This is a tough one. I would probably have to say the mission trip I went on to Nicaragua in 2008. It changed my life in such a good way. It made poverty more real in my mind. I was able to see and help those who don't live in this wealthy country. I had always known we were very fortunate, but this trip made it more real in my mind.

Do you have a favorite lifetime memory? What is it?
My favorite memory was my wedding day. It really was the best day of my life. I should probably say the day I was baptized but honestly that is not my favorite memory. It is the day that changed my life the most, but the actual action was not as memorable as my wedding. Anyway, everything about my wedding was perfect and getting to spend the rest of my life with my best friend as a result of this day was just icing on the cake! {pun intended}.

If you had one day to do whatever you wanted, money is no object, what would you do? Why?
Only one day? That is not enough time! I guess I would fly to NYC and see as many Broadway shows as I could in one day. Which would only be 2. If I went on a Saturday. Hmmm..... Maybe I should change my answer. But I really can't think of anything else I would rather do in just one day.

11 Facts about me:

  1. I am a Christian.
  2. I have been married to my best friend and high school sweetheart, Pearson for a little over a year.
  3. I have a younger brother named Tyler
  4. I like to sing.
  5. I grew up with 2 Chihuahuas named Angel and Gracie
  6. I now have a 2-year-old hound mix
  7. My favorite color is Purple
  8. I hold the state record in Georgia for bench pressing for girls ages 13-15 in my weight class at the time.
  9. I graduated college {from Harding University} with a bachelors degree in 3 and 1/2 years.
  10. I love musicals.
  11. I am hopelessly addicted to coffee.

My Nominations:
Britt @ It Britt
Annmarie @ The Simply Swift Blog
Laura Beth @ Mrs. Laura Beth

Questions for my nominees:

  1. Why do you blog?
  2. If you were a crayon, what color would you be and why?
  3. What was your favorite food as a child?
  4. What is your favorite, book, movie or TV show? (You can do more than one catagory)
  5. What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
  6. If you could quit your job for 3 months and have all your responsibilities taken care of what would you do? Oh and money is not an object.
  7. What is your favorite season?
  8. What is your favorite place to visit?
  9. If you could be any fictional character, who would you be and why?
  10. When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up and how close did you come do being that?
  11. What songs are included in the sound track to your life?
Thanks again Lacy for nominating me!! And thanks to everyone for reading.

Thankful Thursday: Home Church

Today for Thankful Thursday I am thankful for...

Buford Church of Christ
I have been 'home' all week in Buford, GA. I came for work, but there are always a few more benefits to coming home; mom's cooking (and my not having to cook), seeing my family, cuddling with my doggies, and driving a nice rental car, just to name a few. One of my favorite things about coming home is my church family. I really feel like no matter how long I am away, I can walk in the doors of the Buford Church of Christ building and be bombarded with hugs. They really are my family. I know they all pray for me and Pearson: for our marriage, our life, our safety and our happiness. I know these people truly are happy to see me when I come home. We had a gospel meeting this week so I was at church Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I cannot describe how great it feels to have people get so excited to see me all week! My hugging arms are tired and my cheeks hurt from smiling but in the best way possible. My heart is happy and my cup overflows. So this week I thank God for my wonderful family I will always have at Buford Church of Christ.

Thanks for reading!

DIY: Long-Distance-Best-Friends Coffee Mugs

Remember my best friend, Ashley? You know, the one who got married in June. Well, her birthday was last Wednesday. I wanted to do something fun for her, but she lives in Arkansas and I live in Ohio.... So I turned to the trusty Pinterest. I wanted to find something practical, but also cute and sentimental.
Alas, "Long-Distance-Best-Friends coffee mugs" {I made up the name}

Here is the pin that I found...

I decided to go for it.

What I used:
  1. Cheap, white mugs. I bought white porcelain mugs from Target, but I found out later that the marker stays better on ceramic. So Ash, if the marker starts coming off, tell me and I can make another one.
  2. Sharpies. I used black and red.  (The red sharpie turns yellow in the oven so you might want to use another color. I just drew over them again after I baked the mugs.)
  3. Hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, or acetone nail polish remover to fix mistakes.
  4. A box and bubble wrap for packing to send to your friend. I just did this part at the post office.
What I did:
  1. I stuck both mugs in the dishwasher with a load of dirty dishes before I started my project.
  2. I printed the shapes of our two states (Ohio for me and Arkansas for her) off the computer and cut them out.
  3. I practiced tracing them on paper.
  4. I taped them to the mugs and traced around them ever so lightly with sharpie.
  5. After I got them traced, I took the paper off the mugs and went over my drawings darker with the sharpie.
  6. Next I put little red hearts over Columbus and Searcy, where we each live. Then I put the mugs side by side and drew a dotted line between the hearts.
  7. I wrote the names of the states above the outlines. Not that I don't think people will know what the states are but I just felt like it needed something else.
  8. I decided to write "Best... ...Friends" on the inside of the mugs instead of "Miss You" like the original tutorial I found. I just liked this better and thought it fit better with the fact that she would have one and I would have the other. You know, like the "best friends" necklaces that young girls wear. Now this step is hard because you are writing inside the cup. I admit, I messed up a couple of times, but while the marker was still wet, I was able to wipe it off with hydrogen peroxide and fix it. I hear that acetone nail polish remover and rubbing alcohol both work too, but I did not try these, so don't blame me if they don't work.
  9. Once I got the mugs looking the way I liked, I popped them in the cold oven and turned it to 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. I researched this quite a bit before I did it and learned that the hotter the oven, the better the marker will stay, but if you put the mugs in an already-hot oven, they could crack. They need to slowly heat up with the oven. Likewise, if you take them out of the oven immediately, the could crack. So after the 30 minutes, I turned the oven off and let it cool with the mugs still inside.
  10. While the mugs were baking, I checked on them several times because I was a little worried they might turn yellow. I had read of this happening sometimes but it was not a problem with me.
  11. When they were done baking and had cooled completely, I took them out of the oven. I packed the Ohio one up in a box and mailed it to Arkansas along with a picture of the two mugs together. I kept the Arkansas one and I think of Ashley every time I drink out of it.
  12. And one last tip, supposedly these are dishwasher save, but I think I am only going to hand wash mine. I mean after all, I am probably the only one who will be using it so it won't need to be washed very much anyway.
Ashley got her mug the day before her birthday and posted this picture on Facebook with the caption "I have the best best friend ever!!! Love you and miss you!! Hopefully visiting you soon!!!!". I am really glad she liked it and I really hope the marker stays on them.

Thanks so much for reading!

I Love Fall!!!

It is almost Fall! Well, I supposed the validity of that statement depends on your definition of the word 'almost'. The official first day of Fall is September 22. That's 'almost' in my book. You know how I can tell it's almost Fall? Because stores already have fall/Halloween decorations on display for sale. There are some really cute Halloween costumes for dogs at PetSmart and I really want to find the perfect one for Pip. Is that acceptable? I have one in mind for him that goes along with my and Pearson's costumes. :) I am excited for this year's theme. If you don't know, I love Halloween and plan costumes way in advance. Now we just have to make sure we have somewhere to wear them.

Fall is my favorite time of the year and here is why...

cozy sweaters
hay rides
picking pumpkins
carving pumpkins
changing and falling leaves
scary movies
haunted houses
corn mazes
pumpkin pie
pumpkin flavor or scented anything
first days of school

crisp air
changing over my closet
county fairs
fire in the fireplace
apple picking
hot drinks
opening the windows
renewing of TV shows after summer hiatus
cuddling under a blanket

What did I miss? I am sure there is something. Fall is so wonderful, there is no way I listed everything. What would you add to my list? Now I think I will go get out my pumpkin candle and find some fall decor I saved from last year.

As always, thanks for reading!

Thankful Thursday: Lasting Friendships

Today for Thankful Thursday I am thankful for...
Long Lasting Friendships

I am very thankful that I have friends from my past that are still my friends. I have friends from my youth group growing up. I have friends from my college days. I have friends from our time here in Ohio. I have friends from all of these stages of life that are still some of my best friends. I can call them up [or Skype with them, as it were] and the conversation picks up like there was no break and we aren't living like 500+ miles away from each other. I have friends from all stages of life who, if called upon, would support me and hold me up if I need it. They know me, they love me, and they support me. Even with lots of space and time separating us. That is what I am thankful for today: long lasting friendships. They are such a blessing!

As always, thanks for reading!

Marriage and Relationship Goals for September

Today I am linking up with Amberly @ A Prioritized Marriage for the first time. She does a monthly Marriage and Relationship Goals linkup that I have read month after month but have never joined. The only reason I can think of for not linking up earlier is that I forget about it till it is too late and I don't have time to come up with a post. Well, today I am making myself do it. So there.

I have been kind of a meany lately. This weekend, I really noticed this problem in myself. I was grumpy, irritable, and just downright emotional about little stupid things. I have been trying to do too much and letting things get to me. And poor Pearson got to be the innocent victim. He handled it all great! I have the best husband ever, hands down! He would have never even called me out on anything. He just tried to help me with whatever it was and calm me down.

My goal this month is to be positive in everything I do so that I don't put even more stress on my wonderful husband. No more taking out my frustrations on him just because he is there. Whenever anything doesn't go exactly the way I wanted or planned, I will stop, step back, take a deep breath, and come at it from a positive angle. I will not let the stress get to my head and hurt my relationship with Pearson. I have already committed to several extra things these next few months so cutting them from my calendar is not an option. Besides, that is not really the problem. The problem is my attitude. That is what I am going to change this month. I know it won't be easy and I will need to rely on God to help me change and on Pearson for support, but slowly I will become the person I want to be and that my husband needs me to be.

Thanks for reading!
