I don't want to find happiness

I've seen a lot of posts lately about being happy. Post that tell me to love myself, do things for myself, set aside time for myself etc. All this stuff is good. Great even. But we can't rely on these things to keep us happy all the time. They won't and they shouldn't have to.

Other posts (like this one by Cassey of Blogilates) have said to surround yourself with people who build you up. They say to be kind to others and treat them well and you will be happy. But we shouldn't put the weight of our happiness on other people either.

You see happiness is an emotion that is controlled by our experiences and how we perceive them. We cannot expect to be happy all the time because there will be sad and difficult seasons in our lives. And even little day-to-day things will leave us feeling "happy" one day and possibly "sad" and "depressed" the next.

But the thing is, I don't care about being "happy."

Say, what??? That's right, I don't care much about finding happiness in life. What I want to find is joy. Because that's what God cares about too. Now don't get me wrong, God wants you to be happy. In fact, almost everything on Cassey's list is also a commandment from God (Seriously, I found scriptures for them). But He never promised that life will be full of of rainbows and butterflies all the time.

So what I want is a deep, spiritual joy that comes from knowing that I am the daughter of a Heavenly King and that one day I will be in Heaven in the presence of that King and my loving Savior. That trumps everything else that happens on this earth. Everything. This joy does not sway with circumstances. It is not a rollercoaster of ups and downs like my "happiness" might be. It is deeper than emotion.

We learn about this joy in the Bible when James tell us at the beginning of his book to "Count it all joy...when you meet trials." In order for someone to consider trials a testing of their faith and to count it as joy, that joy has to be rooted deep within them. That's the joy I want.

So next time you are at a low point in your life and are feeling unhappy, remember that God sees the whole picture, remember what he sacrificed for you, and remember the reward he has promised if we follow his Word: we will one day be singing with the Angels and nothing in this life will matter anymore.
