Putting Effort into my Appearance - Marriage & Relationship Goals {link up}

Last month, our 'young married' group from church discussed the chapter in His Needs, Her Needs about the man's need for an attractive spouse. Wow. Talk about dangerous waters. But the argument was not really that the men should love their wives for who they are not what they look like, but more of how the wife should feel like she can be herself when she comes home. We've had a long day at work and just want to put some comfortable clothes on, take our makeup off and contacts out, and give our bodies a rest. And you don't even want to know all that was said about what we wear to bed.

But someone said something that really got me thinking. One of the guys said "But when you put on all that makeup and get dressed up to leave the house and then come home and take it all off, it looks to us like you are trying to impress other people instead of us." That was all he said, but what I heard was that this could be interpreted as we wives put more stock in what other people think of us and maybe we are even trying to gain the attention of other men outside of our home. This is not it at all, of course. We were makeup for many reasons but a lot of it is our culture and what is expected of us.

Anyway, I decided I want to put more intentional effort into my appearance for my husband. Even if I mean nothing of it when I dress down when it's just the two of us, I don't want him to think anything of it either. This means even if I've been working at home in my pajamas all day and we don't have anything planned for that night, I will still change into some jeans and a nicer shirt before he comes home. Or maybe on a Saturday when I don't have anywhere to be, I'll still get up and shower and put on a little makeup. That's surely not too much to ask, right? Right!
