What I'm Reading, Watching, and Listening To {June 2018}

Well guys, it's been a month and a half since my last Reading, Watching, Listening post, and I haven't finished a single book. I decided I liked writing these posts at the end of the month rather than the middle. And I just haven't been able to read much.

You know, I've noticed that I can't lose myself in a book like I used to. I find my mind wandering and thinking about all the things I should be doing instead of reading. And what's strange is back when I was able to lose myself in a book, I had much more responsibilities. Like when I was in either high school or college and I was studying, playing sports, and doing all sorts of other extra-curriculars.

I think the difference may be that I now work for myself and the work of a "blogger" (or "influncer" or "content creator" or "entrepreneur" or whatever you want to call me) is never done. So while I was in school, I could spend time reading and not worrying about other things because it was outside of class time, my homework was done, and I didn't have practice that day.

And, it doesn't help that a lot of my work is done on my phone which is pretty much always right beside me and is addicting in nature.

But I digress... Let's just get to the other things I've been reading, watching and listening to lately, shall we?

None. As I mentioned.

TV Shows:

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 4

Season 4 of the beloved Netflix original didn't disappoint. Kimmy was still Kimmy. Titus, Jacqueline, and Lillian were still perfect. All the story lines progressed as needed. The ridiculousness got more ridiculous (in a good way). And the evil reverend is still finding ways to ruin Kimmy's life. This season was actually made better than the others in my opinion by the addition of jabs at Trump and the current state of our country! Pure gold!

Oklahoma! (with Hugh Jackman)

Alright. if you watch my Instagram Stories, you probably know that I finally watched the Aussi version of Oklahoma! toward the end of May. You need to know that I have always been a big fan of Oklahoma! In fact, my brother played Judd Fry in a school production. And Harding did it as their homecoming musical my freshman year. Plus, I've always loved the 1955 movie. Also, it's no secret around here, but I love Hugh Jackman and everything he does! So I've been dying to watch this version for a long time and I finally found it on DVD at my library.

So anyway, first I want to say that it had been a while since I'd seen it and there were a few things I forgot about. Or that I just hadn't picked up on before. Like, I don't ever think I realized that the looking glass that Will brought back from Kansas City had pictures of naked ladies in it. Whoops. Guess I was pretty darn innocent last time I watched it. Either that or Harding left that part out. Also, I always knew that Ado Annie was pretty easy, but before this particular viewing, I didn't really pick up on the fact that nobody really cares that the peddler gets around. Double standards, man. Thanks, feminism for helping me pick up on this. And lastly, I never realized how incredibly Will can dance and swing a rope. Again, that may be more of a reflection on this particular production than my perceptiveness in the past.

Deadpool 2

Ok so I wasn't a huge fan of the first Deadpool. It was a bit too crude, if you know what I mean. But we saw the second one because it looked really good and because we have MoviePass. Well, you guys! They toned down the crudeness a ton! It's wasn't near as bad as the first one. There were still a couple scenes that were adult. But I didn't cringe the whole time and want to just melt into my seat. It was still absolutely hilarious, had a dropped a ton of super hero names, broke the 4th wall for the entire movie, and even taught a great lesson about family!

Solo: A Star Wars Story

You guys! This movie was surprisingly so good! It was better than The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi combined. It was even better than Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. And according to Pearson it was "much better than it had any right to be!"

I think it got a lot of bad press and people weren't expecting much from it because they didn't like the idea of a new, Han Solo played by somebody besides Harrison Ford and because The Last Jedi was such a let down. But you guys! This movie was amazing! Alden Ehrenreich played an excellent Han. He made it his own, but after only a couple scenes I forgot that I wasn't watching Harrison Ford. I was simply watching Han Solo.

Also, they explained a lot of Han's back story, of course. Like how he got the Falcon, how he met Chewie, and how he got into the life of a smuggler and fell in with Jabba. And there were even some fun catchphrases and other lines that were nods to what we already know of Han. But it wasn't cheesy! It was so well done!

And lastly, the other characters were perfect. Donald Glover was brilliant as Lando! They even had an exchange that explains why Lando mispronounces Han's name. And I thought they handled the love interest very well. I did not like the idea of Han being with anybody besides Leia, but throughout this movie, I found myself really liking Emilia Clarke's Qi'ra, much to my own dismay. But they handled it well and now the scruffy looking nerf herder can go fall in love with the princess!

Oceans 8

This movie was fantastic! It was even better than I expected and I had pretty high expectations! But can you blame me with the stellar cast? Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, and Mindy Kaling, just to name a few. Boy I tell you, I think I would totally take on a life of crime just to get to hang out with these fabulous ladies!

Plus, I think I've just become a person that can enjoy a movie like this that makes you think. A lot had to happen just right for the heist to go down and these characters were brilliant. I believe (and I may be wrong because it's been a long time) that the other Oceans movies focused more on the action and stunts and less on the brain power and plotting.

Life of the Party

Y'all. Melissa McCarthy did not disappoint in this movie! Again, it was better than I expected it to be. It was perfectly funny and yet had an emotional serious side to it as well. Gosh I love her so much! I feel like I can say "I loved Melissa McCarthy back when she was just Sookie St. James!"

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Again, this movie was not as bad as I expected. Are you seeing a pattern here? Thanks MoviePass for allowing us to see movies in the theater even when they don't look that great. And here's to them always turning out better than expected!

Anyway, this movie was certainly better than the last Jurassic World. The story was much more compelling. It wasn't just a bunch of scenes of people running away from dinosaurs. There was some of that, don't worry. But it wasn't the whole movie. We get some more back-story of Owen with Blue and the other raptors and it's the cutest sweetest thing ever! It made me fall in love with the dinos more than I ever had before.

I will say, I didn't love the ending but I know some people will love it. It's just a preference and I thought it should have gone another way.

The Incredibles & The Incredibles 2

We went over to a friends house this past Saturday to watch the first Incredibles movie before all going to see the second one together in the theater. I'm pretty sure I've only seen the first one once in my life and I have no idea why. It was amazing!

Both of these movies were fantastic. I mean they're Disney and Pixar, so of course they're good. I don't think those companies know how to make a bad movie. At least not together.

Anyway, I loved the family themes and the lessons about being yourself and believing in yourself. Plus, Jack-Jack growing into his powers is amazing!

You guys, Brita has been busy lately on her YouTube channel she created for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite! She published 5 videos this month and they're super informative and interesting. I had no idea about most of the research she's done on trademarks and what they could mean for the future of HP:WU is so exciting!

Yes Means Yes

My blog friend, Chelsea of The New Wifestyle gave a TEDx talk with her husband in Akron, Ohio a while back. That talk is now on YouTube and it's pretty fantastic! Pearson and I have already implemented the "Yes Means Yes" concept in our marriage and it's already helped so much! The Averys are geniuses!

Jordan Lee Dooley of Soul Scripts

So my sister-in-law has been sharing a lot lately about how she studies her bible and how Jordan Lee Dooley changed the way she studies. I mean, Mary talked about Jordan on Instagram SEVERAL times so I decided I should check it out. Well, I'm hooked. I even signed up for the SHE Refined Project!

Anyway, I haven't been able to watch a ton of her videos on YouTube yet. (I literally found her yesterday). But I did really like this one about how she studies her bible and her version of bible journalling. Now I just need a journalling bible!

Little Women trailer

Did you know there's a new Little Women movie coming out in September? It's going to be a modern retelling on the 150th anniversary of the book. Little Women might just be my favorite classic story and this new movie looks so good, according to the trailer. Also, the actress who plays Jo went to my high school and was in theatre with my brother, so that's another reason to be excited!

I've actually been listening to 2000s hits and dance music. It's pretty motivating to clean to! Other than that, not much has changed since last month's post. Still listening to my Disney, Broadway, and Instrumental playlists a lot along with The Greatest Showman, Beauty and the Beast, and Hamilton soundtracks.

What have you been reading, watching, and listening to lately? Have any recommendations for me? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for reading!
